passion project: SD Records
For this project, we had to choose something we were passionate about to create an accordion fold brochure and app prototype around. I chose record stores in San Diego because music is a huge part of my life and I'm starting a record collection. The concept for the app is that it encompasses record shopping and social media in one -- users can find record stores / specific records in stock near them, trade or sell their own records, and post to a forum that is catered to vinyl record lovers in San Diego. The accordion brochure focuses on one event held bi-monthly by Vinyl Junkies Record Shack called the Vinyl Junkies Record Swap.
INSPIRATION
I have always loved retro concert posters, album covers, and graphic designs in general from the 60's and 70's, and once I had decided that my topic was records I immediately knew I was going to use those as inspiration. However, I didn't want the design to go in the Art Nouveau direction that a lot of gig posters from back then were styled in, so I just pulled elements that a lot of these designs had in common and used those as the inspiration for my graphics and color palette. I wanted the app to feel fun to interact with, and there are a lot of animations and graphics that were inspired by these retro designs that really help to play into that.
