The Girl in the forest
For this project, I created two posters for the poem, "The Girl in the Forest," by Eliseo Diego. The poem is a reimagining of the story of Red Riding Hood, but from the perspective of a miserable, starving wolf. I wanted to capture the feeling of loneliness as well as the mysteriousness of the forest itself, and I had two main ideas for a poster; one more illustrative, and the other more representative and text-dominant. I couldn't choose which idea I wanted to go with, so I decided to design both.

For my illustrated poster, I wanted to really integrate the type & image so I used the shape of Red Riding Hood's cape to create the title as well as the shape of moss hanging off of a tree to display the author's name. I wanted the trees to feel imposing, so I drew all of them with sharp, angular shapes and curved them in over Red Riding Hood, leading her to the lonely wolf looking on.

For my type-dominant poster, the layout of the letters in the title is meant to be reminiscent of trees lined up in a forest. To create the feeling of things lurking in the darkness, I stretched out long shadows behind the letters, with some of them taking shape of Red Riding Hood, the wolf and a tree. The text of the actual poem follows the diagonal lines created by the letters in the title.
